  Former Islanders Captain Talks about his Career

The Talk of New York Sports host Bill Donohue spoke with former Islander Eddie Westfall, who talked about his Boston Bruins days, playing alongside Hall of Famers Gerry Cheevers, Johnny Bucyk, Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito on a club that won 2 Stanley Cups in 3 years. Eddie then spoke about his time on Long Island, when he brought his versatility and penalty-killing skills to the Islanders in the expansion draft, where where he was named the club’s first captain, scoring the Isles first goal ever in their first game ever! Ed and Bill then delved into the prelude to glory, when Al Arbour took the reigns as coach and Bill Torrey was putting the building blocks in place (“blocks” named Trottier, Bossy, Potvin, Gillies, Nystrom, etc.), architecting the dynasty that would go on to win 4 Stanley Cups. .

The Talk of New York Sports host Bill Donohue welcomed the “Beezer”, John Vanbiesbrouck to his show, who first told some interesting tales from the junior/minor league days, moving on to the story of a young American goaltender making it on Broadway with the Blueshirts. A Vezina Trophy winner himself, “Beezer” then teamed with Mike Richter to form a stellar tandem in the nets for the Rangers before moving on to become a star again in south Florida with the expansion Panthers. With the goal of drinking from the Cup proving elusive to the 300-game winner. John spoke of the how hard he worked and the pride he took in his distinguished career as a top goalie of his day in the NHL.

  Bill Donohue talk with former NBA star Rick Barry

The Talk of New York Sports host Bill Donohue welcomed Rick Barry to his show, who discussed the days when a kid just out of the University of Miami was an NBA All-Star with the San Francisco Warriors, before becoming the marquee player for the fledgling ABA in the early days. From the Virginia Squires, Rick came to the Nets to help the renegade league, with its 3-point shot and its red, white and blue ball, make a name for itself. Being a big ABA and old New York Nets fan, Bill spent some time speaking with Rick about how Rick felt about the team, the ownership and the area before he jumped back to the NBA Warriors. Rick also discussed his All-Time NBA Top 5 and well as his unorthodox but highly-effective free-throw shooting. The outspoken Barry proved to be a tremendous interview.

NY Hockey Talk host Rob Kowal talks with former New York Rangers enforcer Chris Nilan, who spoke about his time playing in New York, his thoughts on fighting in the NHL, and the game today compared to when he played. Nilan also gave his opinion on the possible reasons for the rash of concussions throughout the National Hockey League, and the tragic deaths of NHL players Derek Boogaard, Rick Rypien and Wade Belak this past off season. Chris also talked a little about his coaching career, and some of what he is up to today, including his work on TSN Radio 990 in Montreal.

NY Hockey Talk host Rob Kowal talks with former New York Ranger Stéphane Matteau, who spoke about his famous overtime goal against the Devils in Game #7 of the Eastern Conference Finals back in 1994 as the Rangers made their way towards winning the Stanley Cup for the first time in 54 years. Stéphane also talked about the upcoming Winter Classic and the Alumni Game played the previous day, his current assistant coaching position in the QMJHL, and recalls the time he played in the Little League World Series as a 12-year old back in 1982 with former Islanders forward Pierre Turgeon. Finally, Stéphane proudly speaks about his son Stefan- who is among McKeen’s Scouting top 30 mid-season 2012 NHL draft eligibles.

John reflects about the emotion that day, as well as when he performed at a Yankee stadium at the end of September. John also talked about how he ended up singing at Madison Square Garden before Rangers games since 1980, as well the team’s magical season back in 1994. John also shared some funny stories throughout his career including a funny episode with Phil Rizutto in Baltimore, as well as a sing-a-long former with Knick Charles Oakley prior to a Knicks game at MSG.
