During the interview, Jeff discusses his childhood idols… his time in Junior hockey playing with former Rangers goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck and former Islanders forward Derek King… how he found his niche as a physical defensive defenseman… his early years playing in Edmonton, including the Oilers great rivalry with the Flames and his cousin Joe Nieuwendyk… playing with Brian Leetch, and how he was in some ways underappreicated… his thoughts on Mark Messier and some of the things he did as captain to lead the team… being on the ice for Stéphane Matteau’s famous goal against the Devils in the playoffs… how experience played a role for him when he won the Stanley Cup with the Rangers in ‘94… how the game has changed over the years… his charity work, particularly with the Ice Hockey in Harlem program… his thoughts on Matt Johnson, who in essence ended his career when he suffered a concussion as a result of a cheap shot he received from him… his current job as an Assistant Coach in the Ontario Hockey League.

Steve Rogan and Tom Goren from The Starting NYNE talk with former New England Patriots QB Steve Grogan about the Jets 28-21 defeat of the New England Patriots in this evenings playoff game. The guys also talked with Steve about his playing career, and some of wht he is doing today.

The New York Islanders today fired Head Coach Scott Gordon, and named Jack Capuano as interim head coach. Capuano has been the Islanders head coach for the team’s AHL affiliate Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Gordon will remain in the Islander organization as a special advisor to the general manager. The team is currently in the midst of a 10-game winless streak, prompting the move by Islanders GM Garth Snow.

I had a chance to speak with the Islanders new interim head coach back at the start of the 2007-08 season, when he was just starting his first year as head coach of the Sound Tigers.

The Starting NYNE’s Paul Revelant talks with Luis Tiant, the former major league pitcher who played for both the Red Sox and the Yankees. Topics discussed included Luis childhood memories, and highlights from his playing career.
